Friendship/729 Focus 1
Rubber description:
This rubber is a versatile, control-oriented sheet designed for players who prioritize placement, spin, and consistency over raw speed. It features a medium-soft sponge—typically rated around 42 degrees—that provides significant dwell time, allowing for high precision during loops, blocks, and technical shots. While it is not categorized as a fast rubber, it rewards players with long, aggressive strokes, providing enough energy to finish points when powered by proper body rotation and technique.
Playing Characteristics
- Type: Sticky
- Spin and Dwell: The topsheet offers excellent spin potential, making it well-suited for spinny loops, controlled chops, and precise service placement. The high dwell time aids in touch play, especially in the short game and during passive blocks.
- Control and Forgiveness: Highly regarded for its exceptional control, the rubber is forgiving of slight stroke variations. It excels in the backhand-oriented game, steady blocking, and as a foundation for modern defensive play, including chopping away from the table.
- Speed and Throw: It is generally considered a slower rubber, often requiring pairing with an offensive-rated blade to achieve adequate pace. Throw angle reports vary, with some noting a higher arc and others citing a low, flat trajectory depending on the specific technique and blade pairing.
Suitability
Due to its emphasis on precision and technique-driven power, this rubber is recommended for semi-professional and intermediate players rather than beginners. It serves as an effective tool for those developing an all-round game, functioning particularly well as a backhand option for players who value stable blocking and consistent topspin attacks. Because of its weight, users should be mindful of the total setup mass when using thicker sponges.

This rubber is the perfect choice for backhand players who play close to the table and excel in attacking with their backhand. It also provides exceptional control and allows for various speed variations, enabling both active and passive blocking.
The rubber’s hardness makes it well-suited for defensive play at the second or third position, particularly when chopping with the forehand. It allows for extremely low throw angles against topspin drives.
Furthermore, this rubber boasts exceptional durability, offering excellent value for money.
It’s important to note that the speed of a shot should primarily come from the player’s legwork, body rotation, and stroke, rather than relying solely on the equipment.

Very good control, but it lacks speed, even though it has enough spin.
