Rubber description:

The 729-5 is a hybrid table tennis rubber that balances speed and control, offering a distinct alternative to traditional, highly tacky Chinese rubbers. While it features a slightly tacky surface when new, its performance characteristics lean more toward those of European-style rubbers, making it a versatile option for all-around play.

Performance Characteristics

  • Speed and Spin: The rubber offers a notable step up in speed compared to traditional 729 variations. While it can generate significant spin, it requires aggressive technique and a strong brush to maximize its potential. It is generally less spin-sensitive than fully tacky rubbers, which aids in control during blocking and short game exchanges.
  • Throw Angle: Users generally report a medium to medium-high throw angle, though this can vary based on the incoming ball speed and the specific contact depth.
  • Feel and Dwell: The rubber typically features a medium-hard sponge, though it is often perceived as having a softer, more elastic feel during impact. This “springy” quality allows for good feedback and a balance of dwell time that makes it effective for both flat hitting and looping.
  • Consistency: It is widely regarded as a reliable choice for players seeking a consistent, predictable response. It performs well for blocking, driving, and controlled attacking from close to mid-distance.

Usage and Suitability

  • Versatility: Due to its predictable nature and controlled response, it is frequently recommended for backhand play, where blocking accuracy is prioritized.
  • Durability: The initial tackiness tends to dissipate with use, transitioning the rubber into a more mechanical, friction-based playing surface. It maintains its structural integrity over time, providing a high price-to-performance ratio for tournament-level amateurs and club players.
  • Maintenance: It is best suited for players who prefer a rubber that does not excessively amplify the spin of incoming balls, allowing for a more straightforward, offensive-oriented game.

I had this on my FH for a while. It was pretty good when new but now it just doesn’t have any life left. The spin and throw really went down as it lost all of its slight tack and it aged.

I still have it around as a spare sheet.

Weight is 47 g in black 2.2 (max), so medium-heavy, and about 66 g uncut.

If you’re looking for a rubber similar to Sriver or Mark V but at a lower price, this is it. It offers average to above-average speed and performs well in all aspects but doesn’t excel at any specific feature. Paired with a quality blade, it can create a formidable racket suitable for advanced amateur or minor league competitors.

Note that the ratings given by the community for this rubber are inflated (it’s unlikely to achieve a perfect 9 in all three major categories). Nonetheless, it’s still a decent rubber.

Update: This rubber has been found to be more effective for backhand shots than forehand shots. Forehand looping can be challenging with 729-5.

Speed: 6
Spin: 6
Control: 7.5
