The 802-40 OX is a short pips-out table tennis rubber, designed for players seeking a disruptive and controlled game. The “OX” designation indicates that this rubber is without a sponge, meaning it’s glued directly to the blade. This characteristic significantly impacts its playing characteristics, emphasizing control and blocking over inherent speed. The short pips provide a unique trajectory and spin reversal effect when blocking incoming spin, making it difficult for opponents to predict the ball’s return. While it lacks the inherent speed of inverted or sponged pips rubbers, the 802-40 OX excels at close-to-the-table play, allowing for quick blocks, pushes, and counter-attacks.
Due to its sponge-less design, the 802-40 OX offers exceptional control and a very direct feel for the ball. Spin generation is limited compared to inverted rubbers, but it can still impart some spin, particularly when pushing or serving. Its primary strength lies in its ability to disrupt the opponent’s rhythm and spin game. The lack of sponge makes it less sensitive to incoming spin, allowing for consistent and controlled blocks. This rubber is best suited for players who prioritize blocking, pushing, and short game tactics, often employing a defensive or disruptive style close to the table. It’s a popular choice for players who want to neutralize spin and force errors from their opponents through unpredictable ball trajectories.
I paired with Yinhe Y-16 & Tibhar Lebesson blade; it’s fast; has decent spin. With Donic Glue Vario Clean glue, it has a low throw on push; with DONIC Blue Contact Glue, it has a high throw on push.
I tried using it on the backhand side for about 3 days and it’s hard to control… However, the opponent also has a hard time. It seems good for shakehand users who expect change.
If there is time, I want to try adapting to both sides of the penholder rubber one more time.
