Friendship 729 was created in Tianjin in 1972 specifically to develop the first Chinese sticky rubber for the national squad. Classics like 729 Super FX and Battle II helped define the Chinese style of heavy push play, strong backspin serves, and powerful spinny forehand loops. World champions like Xi Enting and Liang Geliang used 729 rubbers to capture major international titles during the 1970s and 1980s.
