Butterfly Iolite Neo
Blade description:
The Iolite Neo is a high-speed, offensive-oriented composite blade featuring a balsa wood core. Its construction is notable for its lightweight nature and its incorporation of Hinoki outer plies, which contribute significantly to its performance profile. The blade is designed for aggressive play, offering explosive power in topspin rallies and effective performance in smashing, while remaining less stiff than traditional carbon blades.
Performance Characteristics
- Feel and Dwell: The blade is known for a unique, somewhat polarizing feel. While some players experience a soft, dwell-heavy sensation that aids in topspin execution, others note a high-catapult effect that can diminish the feedback of the ball at high speeds.
- Speed and Balance: It is categorized as an exceptionally fast blade, capable of outperforming many ZLC and ULC models in raw speed. The weight distribution is slightly head-heavy, a design choice that facilitates the generation of power during offensive strokes.
- Control and Consistency: Despite its high velocity, the blade offers notable consistency when paired with the appropriate rubber. Because of its explosive nature, it is highly sensitive to rubber selection; it performs best with linear, non-tacky rubbers, while hard-sponged or high-speed rubbers may make the setup difficult to control.
Utility
- Offensive Versatility: The blade excels in looping and aggressive flicking. Blocking requires a period of adjustment due to the blade’s speed, but the Hinoki outer plies provide a stable surface once the player is acclimated.
- Design: Compared to its predecessor, the Iolite Neo features a lighter total weight and an updated handle design, prioritizing player comfort during extended use.

Speed rubbers with hard sponges are not suitable. Tacky rubbers are also not recommended.

After testing this blade with so many rubbers, I was initially disappointed with it. However, I eventually found the rubber that suits this special blade: Calibra Tour M.
The combination of this blade and rubber is amazing. The Tour M is so linear that it even makes the iolite Neo (a balsa core blade) play more linearly. And once this ultra-fast blade becomes more linear, it has everything an attacker could dream of: a neutral throw, absolute power, amazing dwell time, incredible spin, great consistency, and a light weight. It becomes so easy to generate powerful topspins with this setup.
The only issue is finding a second blade like this, as it is very hard to come by in 2015.

I think the blade has a very soft feel. Although this totally irritated me in the beginning,
It is very light; still very fast and not stiff like the usual carbon blade.
I have kept it because I like the soft feeling and will try to use it again.
It is definitely faster than Innerforce ULC, ZLC, ZLF, and Gergely alpha.
Maybe a little slower than Schlager Carbon Off+.
