Butterfly Timo Boll ALC
Blade description:
This composite blade is widely regarded as a benchmark for offensive play, favored for its exceptional balance between speed, spin, and control. It utilizes a 5+2 construction, incorporating an Arylate Carbon composite layer that provides a distinct, crisp feel with a generous and uniform sweet spot. While it is highly capable in high-speed, power-looping scenarios, it is also noted for its ability to maintain control in the short game, provided the player possesses the necessary technical proficiency.
Playing Characteristics
- Speed and Power: The blade features a high gear ceiling, allowing it to generate significant speed from mid-to-far distance, yet it remains manageable and controllable during close-to-the-table play.
- Feel and Dwell: Despite being a stiff composite blade, it offers enough dwell time to generate heavy spin, particularly when paired with modern tensor or high-performance spring-sponge rubbers.
- Feedback: The blade is known for having a solid, direct feel with reduced vibration compared to traditional all-wood blades. While this aids in accuracy for advanced players, those transitioning from all-wood blades may initially find the lack of tactile feedback challenging.
- Weight Distribution: The blade is generally reported to have excellent balance, preventing a head-heavy sensation even when paired with heavier professional-grade rubbers.
Suitability and Use
- Skill Level: Designed primarily for offensive, spin-oriented attackers. It is frequently cited as unsuitable for beginners, as it demands refined technique and consistent contact to maximize its performance.
- Shot Versatility: It excels at topspin loops and counter-topspin exchanges. While it can perform other tasks like blocking, flicking, and serving with high consistency, it is less specialized for defensive chopping.
- Equipment Pairing: Users report that the blade performs best with professional European or Japanese tensioned rubbers. Some players find it less compatible with hard, tacky Chinese-style rubbers due to the specific stiffness and throw angle characteristics of the composite layers.

Still a legendary blade, not many composite blades can compare to it. High-performance looping and heavy spin-oriented players will benefit the most.

Great Blade. I can see why Timo uses it.
