DHS Hurricane 8 Mid-Hard
Rubber description:
The DHS Hurricane 8 is a sticky, Chinese-style rubber designed specifically for the plastic (poly) ball era. It functions as a more elastic and responsive evolution of the classic Hurricane 3 series, offering improved performance in mid-distance play while retaining the hallmark characteristics of a tacky topsheet paired with a firm, dense sponge.
Playing Characteristics
- Spin and Tackiness: The rubber features a mild to moderate level of tackiness—less pronounced than that of Hurricane 3 Neo—which facilitates effective short-game control and service spin. While it maintains a high spin potential, generating maximum rotation requires active player input and proper brush technique.
- Speed and Dwell Time: Performance is highly dependent on player technique and swing speed. In lower gears, the rubber feels controlled and relatively stable, but it requires significant physical effort and racket acceleration to engage the sponge and access its top-end power. Because it is less “bouncy” than modern tensor alternatives, players must actively drive the ball to maximize its output.
- Control and Feel: The rubber provides a high degree of control and a predictable, logical response, making it suitable for looping, driving, and blocking. Users often find it easier to adapt to than harder, traditional Chinese rubbers, as it offers a slightly more elastic feel that aids in maintaining a consistent arc.
Usage and Maintenance
- Technical Requirement: This is a performance-oriented rubber that rewards players with sound footwork and correct body mechanics. Users who lack the necessary technique or explosive power may perceive the rubber as slow or “dead.”
- Compatibility: While some players choose to boost the sponge to increase elasticity and catapult effect, the rubber is designed to be functional in its factory state. It performs well on both forehand and backhand, though it is heavier than many non-Chinese alternatives and is often preferred on flexible or all-wood blades to improve dwell time and spin coupling.
- Durability: As a tacky rubber, it requires regular cleaning and the use of a protective film to maintain its grip. Its performance characteristics are generally stable over time, though it may undergo a brief break-in period during initial use.

I like this rubber because it helps me improve my FH technique. Without good technique, you will not achieve a good topspin and the rubber may seem slow. It offers great control, allowing me to deliver awesome loops even against heavy backspin. However, as mentioned earlier, the right technique is crucial, utilizing your legs and generating power from the body rather than the arm. I use it on a Yasaka Max Carbon 3D blade (very fast) and they work perfectly together at mid-distance, making it easy to place the ball on the table in counterspin situations. Not the best choice if you are searching for a super-fast rubber.

Not fast, but with good control.
