DHS PF4

DHS PF4 - main

Rubber description:

This rubber is a classic, tacky Chinese-style product characterized by its hard sponge and slow, controlled speed profile. It is widely considered an excellent tool for beginners and developing players, as it provides direct, honest feedback that requires the user to employ proper, full-stroke technique to generate power and speed. Because it lacks the “catapult” or “spring” effect found in many modern European or Japanese tensors, it is not an inherently fast rubber and requires significant physical effort to finish points from mid-distance.

Playing Characteristics

  • Spin and Tackiness: The surface is naturally tacky, allowing for high-quality service, heavy underspin, and precise looping. While it is highly capable of producing spin, the rubber requires a clean, active stroke to engage the sponge effectively.
  • Speed and Dwell Time: It is a relatively slow rubber, favoring control and consistency over explosive speed. It excels in the short game, pushing, and chopping, where its low throw angle and high dwell time allow for precise placement.
  • Control: This rubber is highly regarded for its reliability in defensive play, active blocking, and placement, making it a favorite for all-rounders and traditional defensive choppers who prioritize accuracy.
  • Technical Requirements: Due to its hard nature, it is not forgiving of poor technique. It performs best when paired with blades that offer a good sense of feeling. It is notably durable, though the tackiness may require regular maintenance to preserve its performance over time.

It’s not the best rubber, but for its price, you can’t complain too much.
It’s well-controlled, good for beginners. Hurricane 3 is better, but this one is cheaper.

This is a very good rubber for all-around players or for aggressive near-the-table style of play. After 20-30 hours of play, this will break in and will be much better. Works very well on flexible blades but also on less flexible ones. Not sure if it works on very stiff or carbon blades.

Not only do I play with the DHS PF4 for several months, but one of my students does too. I actually bought it to test if it was worth recommending to my students, and now I have been playing with it for several months.

My technique was quite bad before (Mark V HPS) and thanks to the PF4 it got way better, meaning: full stroke (Chinese technique), power from the ground (use your legs and your pelvis). Because the PF4 doesn’t do anything the only way to properly accelerate the ball is via the right technique. When you finally hit balls that are as fast as your teammates (who use ESN or Japanese rubber) you can bet that you have a good technique. It is somewhat funny that I can beat my teammates who have sometimes €50+ rubbers with this cheap rubber. I also used to think that you can only play well with more expensive rubbers, but I was dead wrong! If you want to improve, buy this rubber, it is definitely worth it.

It also helps one of my students fix his bad technique (only arm, no body movement). He is now forced to use more body movement and after a few weeks I already saw some improvements.
