Friendship/729 729

Rubber description:

The Friendship/729 729 table tennis rubber is a versatile and affordable option, ideal for beginners and intermediate players seeking a balance between control and spin. This rubber boasts a solid performance with a speed rating of 9.3, spin rating of 9.3, and control rating of 9.3, making it well-rounded for various playing styles. The medium tacky surface allows players to generate respectable spin while maintaining a controllable feel, which is especially beneficial for those still mastering the intricacies of the game.

In terms of tackiness, the rubber scores around 6.7, providing a decent grip on the ball. While it may not produce the extreme spin seen in high-end tensors, it delivers an effective amount suitable for serves and flicks, enhancing a player’s ability to play aggressively, yet tactically. The weight comes in at a low 5.9, adding to its manageability, particularly for new players who appreciate a lightweight setup that promotes faster hand movement and reflexes.

Durability is another strong point, rated at 6.8, allowing this rubber to withstand regular play without significant performance degradation. Many users have noted that while it maintains its tackiness under careful maintenance, such as the application of grip spray, it can lose its initial characteristics over time, necessitating some adjustments to technique.

For those considering alternatives, the 729 729 rubber pairs well with stiffer blades to maximize its performance, and serves as an excellent choice for players transitioning to more advanced equipment as they develop their skills. Overall, the Friendship/729 729 rubber is a brilliantly economical option that does not compromise on quality, making it a staple for aspiring table tennis enthusiasts.

It is a forgiving rubber, making it suitable for beginners. While it doesn’t offer insane spin or speed, its controllability and affordability make it an ideal choice for those just starting out in table tennis.

42-degree Blue Sponge
Medium tack, lowest profile of pips seen, quite wide. Played on FH of a Sanwei Fextra (6mm 7ply).

Controllable and dead in the short game, lively rebound at medium speed, excellent grip on flicks and serves. Hitting hard yields a low-throw shot that is also spinny.

Preferable to faster forehand rubbers. Can hit at max speed, sponge stores energy and loads more spin, resulting in faster shots with only marginally longer trajectories. This may not apply on a slower blade.

It was my first rubber on a preassembled racket. For beginners who are learning PP, this is a good conventional rubber. It has average speed and control, good spin, and it’s durable. It works better on stiff blades.
