Butterfly Boll Allround

“All-round” blade, but not for all of the all-round players. Even if it’s a Timo Boll and classified as “All-round”. This is a stiffy blade, can’t bend it using my hands, but in burst attacks it does have some sort of arch (bolt) and is very good at placing the ball, let’s say, on the left and right corners of the table. So yes, I think the “technology” that this blade has in it, yes, it works.

The blade is more towards the softer side. Compared to a Max Soft DEF blade and a stiff offensive hard blade, the feel when u touch it reminisces a defensive soft blade, but it’s not oversize nor does it look like an ALL blade. It is stiff, but u don’t know it until you see it doesn’t bend when u hit powerful shots. With speed, it does have really good speed on burst attacks and banana flicks, but in every other aspect it doesn’t excel as much. In the control area, it does stay better; you can send long placed shots on the sides of the table, due to the side arch that I saw even when I tested the blade barren. I would say this blade is NOT for an allround player that is looking for: power in smashes, moving the opponent from left to right on short drives, spinny snakes or crazy sidespin or underspin shots, and having a super responsive blade with very good feedback and feeling of the game, looking to evolve/progress to other ALL or ALL+ or OFF blades. *Idk I haven’t tested other blades like Viscaria or Timo Boll ALC, maybe I will update then. But idk for me this blade is not it. It’s more toward ALL- I would say even if it does have speed and control, it doesn’t give you the feedback for an allround game.

For me, I’m an ALL, ALL+ player looking for the exact qualities that I wrote above, and this blade is just not for me. Yes, it is lightweight; it was my 2nd most light blade, the lightest being a fiberglass balsa DEF blade. And while this one being this light (which could be a good thing), it doesn’t give me a good feedback and feeling, which is crucial for me. But yes, it does have a good arch.

A very good blade with a lot of control, but it lacks enough speed and power to play away from the table. It’s also worth mentioning its ability to lob.

With Japanese or German rubbers, it works very well, with decent loops and a long dwell time, providing a good feel. Paired with Chinese rubbers, it can be very slow, however, it produces a large amount of spin.

I recommend it to beginners and players with medium experience looking to develop their own game.

Butterfly has made a confusing change to their allround blade by switching the color of the handle from yellow (now on the TB control) to grey (previously on the TB allround+). This allround blade is of exceptional quality and slightly firmer than traditional allround blades due to its koto outer veneer. It is marginally larger than the TB offensive, resulting in slightly more flexibility. It is an ideal choice for beginner and intermediate players as they refine their techniques.

However, excessive rubber changes should be avoided as the top veneer may detach at the edges despite varnishing. This blade boasts the best straight Butterfly handle, making it suitable for larger hands. It pairs well with both Chinese and European rubbers. Despite its fragility, I now believe that a more affordable Chinese alternative from Yinhe or Sanwei would be a wiser choice.
