Butterfly Boll TriCarbon
Blade description:
The Butterfly Boll TriCarbon is a composite blade featuring a specialized construction that incorporates three carbon layers, internal balsa wood layers, and hard Paduk outer plies. Designed for an aggressive offensive (OFF+) style, it is recognized for extreme speed and a high degree of stiffness. The integration of carbon layers provides an enlarged sweet spot, which helps maintain a level of playability despite the blade’s high-velocity nature.
Performance and Feel
- Speed and Power: Widely regarded as one of the fastest blades produced by Butterfly, it excels in smashing, killing, and high-speed driving. It is intended for players with advanced technique who can manage its rapid ball departure.
- Feel and Dwell Time: While the blade is hard and stiff, the balsa wood layers provide a distinct, smooth sensation. Because the ball leaves the surface very quickly, users typically require soft-to-medium sponges to enhance dwell time and generate spin effectively.
- Control: Due to its high speed, control is considered challenging for inexperienced players. However, when paired with appropriate rubbers, it offers precision for offensive loops and aggressive attacks.
Construction and Handling
- Weight: Manufacturer specifications often suggest a higher weight; however, actual weight varies significantly between individual units. The weight distribution is generally balanced, making it manageable for offensive players.
- Durability: The blade is noted for being somewhat fragile; its hard, stiff construction makes it susceptible to flaking or cracking upon impact with the table.
- Rubber Pairing: The blade is highly sensitive to rubber selection. Soft-to-medium rubbers are frequently recommended to compensate for the blade’s lack of natural dwell, while pairing it with excessively fast, hard-tension rubbers may lead to a loss of control for many players.

It is a good blade, but it has its issues. The material is a bit too fast for its own good. The balance is not so high, which can undermine the overall rating.

My overall rating for this blade is 10. My previous rating of 4 was deleted, which made me upset enough to almost delete my profile. However, I don’t write reviews for personal gain.
I generally like Butterfly products, but this blade was a mistake. It’s incredibly fast and stiff, and it’s prone to cracking if you’re not careful. It has poor control compared to other very fast OFF+ rated blades. If you want a blade that will expose your mistakes, this is a great choice.
I forgot to mention, this blade is banned by the ITTF, which is another negative. Overall, I would give this blade a rating of 3.

The hardest, quickest, stiffness blade I have ever played. I thought it would be a good idea to play with LP on the backhand in order to increase the offensive capacity and it did. Any hit was a kill, but FC with inverse rubber, I did not manage this problem besides the idea of having the table 2 meters longer than it is. As I see it right now maybe with slow anti-spin rubber on FC and LP on BC, but I see no reason for making such an experiment.
