Blade description:

Overview

This is a 7-ply all-wood offensive blade featuring a Koto outer layer. Known for its performance-to-price ratio, it is frequently compared to high-end blades and serves as a capable alternative to more expensive equipment. It is designed primarily for intermediate to advanced offensive players who prioritize speed, consistent looping, and powerful smashes.

Playing Characteristics

  • Speed and Feel: This is a fast, stiff blade that provides a solid, “woody” feel without the dampening often associated with composite blades. While it is classified by some as a high-end OFF blade, users report that it provides enough speed for mid-to-long distance attacking. It features a large sweet spot that maintains consistency even on off-center hits.
  • Flex and Control: Despite its stiffness, the blade retains enough flex to support heavy topspin loops against backspin. It is less prone to vibration than some of its 7-ply counterparts, offering a predictable touch for blocking and counter-looping.
  • Tactile Feedback: The Koto top ply creates a crisp contact sensation. While some users find the handle shape to be thin or slightly rough—often requiring light sanding or adjustments to personal preference—it facilitates easy wrist movement and the ability to maintain a closed angle during aggressive loop exchanges.

Technical Recommendations

  • Rubber Pairing: The blade performs best when paired with medium-hard to hard sponges. Players often find that softer rubbers may bottom out too quickly due to the blade’s inherent speed. High-arc or tacky Chinese rubbers are frequently used to maximize the blade’s spin-generation capabilities.
  • Suitability: Due to its high speed, it is generally not recommended for beginners or all-around players. It is best suited for attackers who engage in fast rallies and require a direct, powerful response from their equipment. Players should note that the handle thickness can vary between individual pieces.

This is a very good 7-ply blade. It is very good for forehand looping from mid-distance. There is a lot of control and consistency along with spin and speed. Plays close to a carbon blade in terms of mid-distance play with the woody feeling. My consistency improved playing with this blade. I like the forehand of this blade. However, the backhand is less than ideal. I bought 2 pieces and noticed that the thickness of the handles differed slightly between the pieces. The 2nd piece that I bought has the better handle like the typical narrow DHS handles that I like. The first piece has a slightly thicker handle that I did not like too much.

OFF blade with 7 layers of wood, it is softer and faster than Power-G 7. This makes it perfect for looping in mid to long distance from the table.

I was hoping the DHS G9 would be an improved version of the G7. That was not the case. Maybe a little faster, but less feeling. Greetings, BN.
