Tibhar H-1-9

Blade description:

This single-ply Hinoki blade is designed for players seeking the unique feel of Japanese cypress wood. It is characterized by a soft, flexible construction that emphasizes a tactile, dampened experience during ball contact. Due to its soft composition, the blade requires careful pairing with harder rubber sheets to extract maximum power and to compensate for the inherent lack of stiffness in the wood.

Playing Characteristics

  • Feel and Feedback: The blade is noted for being quite soft, leading to high levels of vibration. This provides a distinct, dampened sensation that favors controlled, placement-oriented shots over raw speed.
  • Power and Performance: While marketed for power, users report that it lacks the high-end aggressive speed found in premium Hinoki blades. It performs most reliably during blocking and driving, though it may struggle when forced to play against heavy incoming spin or aggressive opponents.
  • Construction: This is an all-wood, single-ply Hinoki blade. It does not utilize carbon or composite layers.

Build and Geometry

  • Dimensions: The blade features a compact, shortened head shape that some users find unconventional compared to standard industry dimensions.
  • Quality Consistency: Feedback indicates potential variability in manufacturing quality, particularly between the older German-made versions and the more recent re-issues produced in China. Users have noted differences in wood grain consistency, which can lead to unpredictable ball trajectory depending on the contact point across the blade face.
  • Handle: The handle design is substantial, allowing for custom sanding, though some players may find the length insufficient for certain grip styles.

I bought this after I saw the Hinoki Power from my Dad’s Hinoki Blade in 2008. This blade is now pretty old. I remember mine was made in Germany, but the re-issue seems to be made in China.

The Blade is pretty fast and does a good job in smashing, but I found out these days that it needs to be paired with a Hard Rubber. Look for the Old Blades that have been sold before the re-issue.

When you buy a 1-ply hinoki blade, you’d expect power, as that’s what Hinoki is famous for. Unfortunately, this blade is relatively weak compared to other well-known Hinoki brands. It has decent control, but that’s about it.
