Yasaka Ma Lin Soft Carbon
Blade description:
This blade is a 5+2 construction composite model that incorporates carbon fibers to enhance speed while maintaining the tactile characteristics typically associated with all-wood blades. It is generally categorized as an OFF- blade, offering a balanced profile that prioritizes control, stability, and feedback over extreme power.
Playing Characteristics
- Feel and Feedback: The blade is noted for its high level of ball feeling, often described as soft and linear. Many users highlight that it provides excellent touch for short-game maneuvers, such as pushing and flicking, due to its ability to dampen vibrations.
- Speed and Control: While it offers more speed than a traditional all-wood blade, it is not considered an overly fast or aggressive option. The performance is highly dependent on rubber selection; pairing it with fast or tensor-style rubbers allows for a more potent offensive game.
- Flex and Dwell Time: The construction allows for a noticeable amount of flex, which assists in generating spin and maintaining dwell time during topspin loops. It is particularly effective for players who emphasize a controlled, looping-based offensive style rather than pure power hitting.
- Stability: The inclusion of carbon provides a larger sweet spot compared to many all-wood alternatives, aiding in consistent blocking and counter-attacking.
Physical Attributes
- Weight and Balance: While manufacturing consistency can vary, most units fall within a moderate weight range, providing a comfortable balance in the hand.
- Construction: The blade features a thin design, which contributes to its agility during close-to-the-table play. The finish is generally regarded as high-quality, though some users may choose to adjust the handle comfort via light sanding.
- Target User: This blade is well-suited for developing players transitioning to their first carbon setup, as well as intermediate to advanced players who prefer a controlled, spin-oriented offensive game. It serves as a reliable “bridge” for those moving away from pure wood blades who are not yet ready for the stiffness and intensity of professional-grade power blades.

This blade offers a very good compromise between speed and touch.
I usually prefer wood blades, and while I think the Ma Lin Extra Offensive is slightly better, this blade is very similar.
It is a little harder and doesn’t flex as much as the all-wood version, but it has some added speed. It also flexes more than the average carbon blade.
