Blade description:

This is an all-wood blade constructed from five plies (Kiri core, Meranti middle layers, and exterior veneers), measuring approximately 5.8mm in thickness. It is characterized by significant flexibility and a pronounced dwell time, which facilitates high spin generation and a high-arc loop trajectory. Players generally describe the blade as providing a classic wood feel with noticeable feedback and vibration.

Playing Characteristics

  • Speed and Power: The blade functions within the All+ to Off- speed range. While it is effective for controlled looping from close-to-mid distance, it lacks the raw power required for high-level, long-distance play. It is not optimized for flat-hitting or smash-heavy styles.
  • Touch and Short Game: Due to its flexible nature, the blade can feel slightly springy in the short game, requiring precise technique to avoid high or long pushes.
  • Weight and Handling: The blade is generally lightweight, allowing for quick maneuverability and rapid acceleration during flicks and loops. However, users have noted that the handle design can be relatively small, which may affect grip comfort for those accustomed to larger handles.

Recommendations

This blade is frequently cited as a tool for developing foundational looping technique and mastering spin-oriented play. It pairs effectively with tacky rubbers, which help stabilize the short game, whereas overly springy or bouncy rubbers may make the blade difficult to control during defensive maneuvers. While accessible for beginners, its performance capabilities are most apparent when used by players who rely on looping, counter-looping, and tactical spin variation.

Yinhe 989 is an ALL+ blade, offering good control, feel, touch, and the ability to generate spin. It’s an excellent choice for beginners to learn the basics of table tennis. I highly recommend this blade.

For a low price, this is a very impressive blade. I definitely recommend using tacky rubber on this blade, because the pushing game will be very difficult with more springy rubber. Pushing with Japanese rubber will be frustrating as it will create lots of long and high balls.

Smashing is fine, but the loop is really the best thing about this rubber. There is lots of speed and spin when looping, especially from midrange. Very easy to create high-arc loops also. Flips are also very good.

Great blade for the price. When paired with the right rubbers, it provides incredible speed and spin. It is a fast All+ blade, or average Off- speed blade. Using a boosted H3Neo commercial and Air scirocco easily makes the blade off to off+. I would recommend it for a close-mid distance looping style. Blocks are alright and the short game is decent.
