Butterfly Sriver L is a time-honored table tennis rubber recognized for its balanced performance, making it an excellent choice for players of all levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals. With a speed rating of 80 and spin also at 80, it offers a reliable all-rounder experience, perfect for various styles of play. The rubber’s control rating of 70 allows players to develop their techniques without the fear of losing precision, making it a delightful option for honing skills.
In terms of tackiness, Sriver L possesses a moderate level (2.7), providing a satisfactory grip for players looking to execute spinny shots. While it may not match the extreme levels of spin offered by newer tensor rubbers, many players appreciate its ability to produce substantial topspin with proper technique. Its weight is classified as medium (5.2), which contributes to its feel and allows for an excellent balance between speed and control during gameplay.
Sriver L is noted for its durability (7.8 rating), with average users reporting a lifespan of 6-8 months even under frequent play. This durability makes it a cost-effective choice when compared to some of the latest rubbers which may offer higher speeds but sacrifice longevity. For those seeking alternatives, while the classic Mark V is often suggested, newer options like tensors may be considered for players prioritizing enhanced speed and spin. However, many players continue to return to Sriver L, valuing its consistent performance across all aspects of the game.
I bought this rubber because it was recommended for beginners in a forum. I was used to classical Chinese rubber (dead sponge with Tacky topsheet) and this purchase was a total disaster. I experienced complete loss of control and it took months to learn how to use it. It was a horrible choice for me, and I was stuck with it because I didn’t have a job at the time.
Despite my adjustment problems, it is a good rubber and helped me learn how to deal with moderate catapult effect and a grippy topsheet. I could recommend it for beginners if it weren’t for the price. There are better alternatives for much less. With the money of two Sriver rubbers, I can buy about 12 Chinese rubbers to test which one fits my style. Now that I have a job, that is exactly what I did; I bought two Friendship General rubbers, two Palio CJ8000 rubbers, one Palio AK47, 2 999 Super 999T rubbers, two Kokutaku 868 rubbers, and two Corbor Reactor rubbers. Total cost: $60.
So far, I have only tested the Palio (European Style) and the Friendship (Hybrid) rubbers. Both suit me better than Sriver, so I gave my old setup to a friend. You can check my other reviews if you are interested in Allround rubbers.
Sriver is still a fantastic rubber. I use it on my forehand with a 1.7mm sponge on a Timo Boll W5 blade (and TSP Curl P1-R OX on my backhand).
With its lower speed, you can really dig in for brilliant spin and control. Counter-hitting is also fantastic.
It works perfectly with the W5 blade. It’s a highly controlled spin bat, but with the thinner sponge, it gains speed from the blade on powerful shots. Brilliant rubber.
Sriver, alongside Mark V, stands out as an exceptional all-around offensive classic rubber. While not as fast or spin-oriented as tensors or glue effect rubbers, it exhibits impressive speed and spin when played with a strong stroke. For those on a budget seeking a versatile performer, Sriver is an ideal choice. Suitable for all strokes in table tennis, it can be utilized by players of all levels, from beginners to professionals.
Sriver excels in blocking and countering near the table, and looping can be formidable with a solid technique. Its durability is commendable, with a sheet typically lasting an average club player 6-8 months of intense play. When paired with a fast carbon blade, Sriver’s speed becomes exceptional.
Having tested numerous rubbers over the years, I can confidently affirm that Sriver remains a classic workhorse. While some may claim it lacks spin, I strongly disagree. With proper technique, I have experienced substantial topspin and serves from Sriver. Do not be misled by those who doubt its capabilities. I also play with Tenergy05, and I still appreciate the diverse range of play that Sriver offers.
