Butterfly Defence 2 (II)
Blade description:
This is an all-wood defensive blade crafted from willow, featuring a unique construction that transitions from 3 to 5 layers across its head. It is characterized by a medium-oversized head shape, which provides a large surface area that is particularly effective for defensive play, including mid-to-long distance chopping. The blade features a large, slightly square handle that facilitates rapid twiddling and provides a secure, consistent grip.
Playing Characteristics
- Feel and Control: The blade is highly regarded for its tactile feedback and high level of control, capable of absorbing the impact of smashes and dampening incoming energy. It offers a soft, yet stiff sensation that creates a distinctive flight path when chopping against heavy topspin.
- Speed and Versatility: While optimized for defense, the blade possesses enough inherent speed for aggressive pushes and surprise counter-attacks. It is versatile enough to support loop-based offensive play, though it performs best when paired with slower-to-average speed rubbers with thinner sponges.
- Performance Considerations: The blade’s stiffness and throw angle require careful rubber selection; it may feel too reactive with high-tension rubbers. While widely used for traditional defense, its speed characteristics also allow it to function as a capable all-round or offensive-oriented tool depending on the player’s setup.

The blade offers 5% more speed than the Primorac, combining a stiff and soft construction. It provides excellent control, allowing players to execute aggressive and low pushes during rallies. When facing topspin balls, the blade imparts a peculiar flight path on the chop, causing the ball to slow down significantly in the air. However, it is important to note that the chop can be executed high, requiring proper technique. As such, this blade is highly recommended for defensive players.

I don’t recommend putting tensors on the blade unless you are an offensive player. I couldn’t control the beast with Donic Baracuda on the forehand. Better go for slow to average speed rubbers with 1.2 to 1.5 mm sponge.
It doesn’t seem good for long pips in OX due to its rigidity and long throw. Since Dragon’s Talon is a fast rubber, it might work with something slow like Donic Alligator. Much better for me with 0.6 sponge.
As I am not a real defender and have no idea how to use the big blade surface, I trimmed it to 153 x 145 mm. It is a bit slower now (Off- to Off maybe) but still quite fast for me and better for chopping than before.
If you find the right rubbers to pair with and you play medium and long distance defense it can be quite a good weapon.
I find it better suited for an all around offensive player than for a defender.

One of the rare all-wood gems from Butterfly. I love the control and weight of this paddle. It’s great for looping and playing defensively from all distances. Highly recommended for a versatile defensive player.
