Donic Alligator Combi

Blade description:

The Donic Alligator is a wooden combination blade designed primarily for modern defensive and all-around playstyles. Featuring a balsa core, the blade is characterized by its extremely low weight and distinct vibrational feedback. Due to the balsa composition, the construction is delicate and prone to denting or snapping, particularly around the handle area, requiring careful handling.

Performance Characteristics

  • Asymmetric Speed: The blade offers a noticeable difference in speed between the two sides, making it a functional choice for players who pair different rubber types—such as pips or anti-spin on the slower side and inverted rubber on the faster side—to dictate the pace of the game.
  • Control and Feel: The defensive side prioritizes consistency and high control, making it well-suited for chopping and blocking. The forehand side provides enough speed for flat hitting and smashes, though it is generally perceived as more effective for controlled offensive play than for heavy looping.
  • Tactile Feedback: Users report small, manageable vibrations that assist in providing tactile feedback, allowing for better accuracy when executing loops and topspins.

Usage Recommendations

  • Rubber Pairing: To balance the blade’s characteristics, it is recommended to pair the offensive side with faster, high-quality rubbers to compensate for the blade’s inherent defensive bias. The backhand side remains highly controllable for those utilizing long pips, anti-spin, or thin-sponge inverted setups.
  • Durability Note: While the blade is highly regarded for its price-to-performance ratio in the modern defense category, its thin outer plies and balsa core make it physically fragile. Players should be aware that consistency in manufacturing speed can vary between individual units.

My current blade setup consists of Butterfly Impartial XS short pips (2.1mm) on the forehand and Donic Piranja long pips (1.2mm) on the backhand.

The control and feel on the forehand side are excellent and complement the short pips perfectly. Similarly, the long pips on the backhand perform well.

As it’s a combination blade, the speed differs between the two sides, making it difficult to rate accurately, but I have no complaints so far. This blade suits my current playing style very well.

This blade is extremely light, as is typical for balsa blades, and offers a great price-to-quality ratio (I acquired it for €40).

Very fast blade. Although it states that it’s a defensive/all-round blade, to me, it seems offensive with medium control. I play with the Stiga Allround Classic, and the Donic Alligator is much faster, even on the backhand side. A good back-up blade to enhance control and accuracy. Good price for the quality of the combination blade.

Great blade at a good price. It’s lightweight with small vibrations, allowing for controllable loops and topspins. The difference between both sides is slightly noticeable. The only thing I disliked was that both outer plies are very thin, but I guess that contributes to its controllability. I suggest always using a fast, high-quality rubber on the ALL+ side and experimenting with the DEF+ side as desired.

However, the quality is not good as the balsa core is flimsy and can easily snap, as verified by several users in other forums.
