Donic J.O. Waldner Gold Edition

Blade description:

This blade features a 3+2 construction with green ALC layers placed in an inner-composite arrangement. It is noted for its high-quality craftsmanship, featuring a well-polished finish and a distinct, ringing acoustic profile. The blade head is slightly larger than standard industry sizes, which helps generate significant spin when hitting with the tip, though players should be mindful of rubber weight to maintain the overall balance of the setup.

Playing Characteristics

  • Speed and Power: The blade offers a linear performance where power output scales directly with swing speed. It remains stable and effective from the table, mid-distance, and even long-distance play, exhibiting high power levels without feeling uncontrollable.
  • Flex and Dwell: The inner-layer construction provides a degree of flexibility that aids in spin generation. It balances a stiff feel at lower speeds with a more flexible response during aggressive topspin strokes, offering a medium arc for looping.
  • Control and Feel: Users report a stable, consistent response with minimal vibration. It is praised for its reliability in the short game, including service return, flicks, and blocks. The feedback is generally described as crisp and bright, though some users note a preference for more direct, wood-like vibration feedback compared to standard outer-carbon designs.

Maintenance and Handling

  • Surface Preparation: The blade face features a decorative graphic/paint layer that requires light sanding prior to rubber application. Failing to remove this coating can negatively impact the bond between the sponge and the blade surface.
  • Handle Design: The handle geometry is described by various users as either somewhat square or narrow/round. Depending on personal preference, some players may find the grip shape to be a specific ergonomic factor to consider.
  • Weight: Units typically weigh between 88 and 91 grams. Due to the slightly larger blade head, pairing the blade with lighter rubbers is recommended to keep the total setup weight manageable.

I don’t think it’s up to the level of the great Joola Rosskopf Fire 07.

The blade has an immensely good feel, especially when your own feeling is on point. It excels at looping from any distance, particularly far from the table.

It is very stable, offering good control and power. Blocking and flat hits work beautifully, as do lobbing and fishing. I use it with BlueStar A1 on my forehand, which is a good combination for spin, speed, and control.

This is a fast blade, so you need to know what you’re doing. Pairing it with a fast rubber requires good technique. The blade fits nicely in the hand; the handle is quite square, so if you like that, it’s a plus.

Excellent blade from Donic, complemented by great service from Tabletennis11.

I would characterize this blade as being in the All Round to OFF- range. It offers good control and a safe, medium arc for looping with a medium dwell time. I would rate its spin, speed, and power as 4 out of 5.

The blade is fairly linear and performs equally well from short, medium, and long distances. The handle is acceptable, although it could be improved by being more rounded and less squarish. The balance is good and not head-heavy. The weight typically falls between 88 and 90 grams.

This blade pairs well with Dignics 09C, Dignics 80, Tenergy 05, and Tenergy 80. However, I would advise against using Dignics 05, as it can become very spin-sensitive when blocking. Overall, this blade outperforms Butterfly blades that cost two to three times as much.

Important: Remember to remove/sandpaper the “JO Waldner” paint. If you don’t, the rubber’s contact won’t be optimal, and the ball may go into the net. Once this is done before attaching the rubbers, the blade plays nearly perfectly.
