Blade description:

The Donic World Champion 89 Appelgren is a 3+2 construction composite blade that bridges the gap between all-around and offensive play. While marketed as an ALL+ blade, many users find its performance closer to an OFF- or OFF rating, offering a versatile range of gears suitable for both controlled blocking and active looping.

Playing Characteristics

  • Feel and Feedback: The blade provides a distinct, “woody” feel characterized by fine vibrations at impact, which offers excellent tactile feedback and precision. It is noted for having a soft outer layer and a moderate amount of flex, which helps hold the ball on the blade for increased spin generation.
  • Speed and Control: It is designed for consistency rather than raw speed. It features a large sweet spot, making it highly forgiving for a variety of strokes. While it performs well at the table and in mid-distance rallies, it may lack the top-end power required for aggressive, long-distance attackers.
  • Weight and Balance: The blade is generally described as light, which facilitates quick recovery and effective performance in the “small game,” including pushes, service returns, and net play.

Construction and Quality

  • Composition: This is a composite blade featuring a 3+2 construction (utilizing Spruce, Carbon Fleece Zylon, Ayous, and Kiri).
  • Build: The blade is praised for its construction quality and balance. However, some users have noted that the handle lenses or decorative elements may be prone to wear or detachment. Handle sizes can feel small to some players, leading some to utilize grip tape for a better hold. It pairs well with a variety of rubber types, including hard, medium-hard, and short pips.

This blade is perfect for people who have only used all-wood blades and want to make the switch to carbon. Though it’s an outer carbon blade, it has great control. I would recommend this blade to anyone who wants to switch from all-wood to outer carbon.

This blade has the identical construction as the Nittaku S-CZ. It’s so good I had to order another one.

I am now playing with DHS H3 prov 39 Orange on the FH and /29 Dragon F medium hard on the BH. The FH is perfect, the BH is still a work in progress but this one is pretty good.

Again TT11 thank you for the best service in the universe.

Cheers

If you think that most outer blades are too fast but still want one, this is for you.

A little flex and a soft outer layer work excellently for a hard(ish) rubber. I use Rakza Z on FH and Neattec X-5 M on BH with this one. Rakza 7 is perfect but Neottec X-5 is just a little bit too fast for me.

Cheers,
L-ZR.
