Donic BlueGrip S2

Rubber description:

The BlueGrip S2 is a hybrid rubber featuring a soft, controlled sponge paired with a grippy topsheet. While often categorized as a hybrid, it lacks the pronounced stickiness associated with traditional Chinese rubbers, offering a grippy, “almost tacky” surface instead. Players should note that the sponge requires an active playing style, as the rubber itself produces moderate speed and relies on the user to generate energy through the stroke.

Performance Characteristics

  • Spin and Control: The rubber is recognized for its high spin potential and excellent control, particularly during spinny serves, active blocking, and controlled loop play.
  • Speed and Dwell: The overall speed is modest, making it best suited for OFF or OFF- blade combinations to compensate for its dampened nature. It features a distinct “spongy” feel with a delayed catapult effect, which can require an adjustment period to master.
  • Throw Angle: While feedback varies, it is generally noted for a high throw angle that facilitates safe looping and precise placement, although some users report a “short” arc on topspin shots that makes it particularly effective for backhand play.

Usage Recommendations

Due to its softer feel and controlled output, this rubber is well-suited for beginner to intermediate players or those transitioning from the classic Acuda S2. It performs most reliably on faster, stiffer carbon-composite blades, which help unlock its potential for aggressive drives and loops. It is less effective for pure smashing and is generally recommended for players who prioritize precision, consistency, and spin-based control over raw power.

Drama, baby, drama! ;) In general, I don’t need rubbers thicker than 1.8 mm on my backhand side, especially when using an offensive blade. Unfortunately, with this particular rubber, I find that I require a thicker version.

Let’s go over the facts: it is a red rubber with a thickness of 1.8 mm, weighing 88 g in its original packaging. Once cut to 157 x 150 mm, it weighs 43 g. The sponge hardness, according to international standards, is 42.5 degrees (though the Chinese rating would suggest around 35 degrees!).

The reason for my disappointment stems from the discrepancy between the rating on a German portal, “TT-Spin,” and the reviews I’ve encountered both here and from various retailers. Along with a noticeable lack of speed, this rubber feels extremely “spongy” due to its very soft top layer. Most rubbers rated at 42.5 degrees on the international scale tend to feel harder.

The only positive aspect I experienced with this rubber, particularly when paired with a hard and very fast blade, was its performance during blocking. I made no mistakes, which was absolutely fantastic! Additionally, the high rotation and control values of this slightly sticky rubber are commendable.

In conclusion, if this rubber were not so soft, I might consider upgrading to a thickness of 2.0 mm. However, I fear that doing so would further amplify the “spongy” feel of the gameplay. Ultimately, I have no idea whom I could recommend this rubber to! :(

Bluegrip S2 has been announced earlier than S1. This combination is similar to the DHS Nat Hurricane 3, featuring a blue and orange sponge. The Bluegrip S2 is much lighter than the DHS rubber. However, it requires significant time and practice to play well with it.

Excellent for a beginner to mid-intermediate player.
