Butterfly Viscaria Super ALC

Blade description:

The Viscaria Super ALC is a composite blade featuring a 5+2 construction. Designed for advanced players, it prioritizes stability, dwell time, and high spin generation over raw top-end speed. Compared to the original Viscaria, this blade is generally perceived as being less fast, offering a more stable and controlled feel during aggressive exchanges, particularly during counter-spin rallies and blocking.

Playing Characteristics

  • Feel and Dwell: The blade is noted for its increased dwell time, which facilitates heavy spin production. While some users describe the core as soft, the overall construction provides a stable, flexible sensation when engaged with medium-to-high power.
  • Stability: It is highly effective for touch play, such as serve receiving and pushing, and maintains composure during high-pressure rallies. It is particularly well-suited for close-to-the-table attacking and mid-distance play.
  • Rubber Sensitivity: The blade is characterized as “picky” regarding rubber selection. It performs best when paired with specific high-performance rubbers, such as hard-sponged tacky rubbers on the forehand (e.g., Dignics 09 °C or Hurricane series) or medium-hard tensors, which help optimize the blade’s dwell and spin potential.

This blade requires a high level of technical proficiency and consistent footwork to unlock its full performance, making it an equipment choice intended for experienced users rather than beginners.

The core of this blade is too soft, and considering it’s a “super ALC,” the blade itself isn’t particularly special.

While you can generate more spin with this blade compared to a regular Viscaria ALC, the core’s softness is a significant drawback. The only positive aspect of this blade is its performance on backhand strokes.

If you’re looking for a fast ALC blade, consider the Fan Zhendong ALC instead. I’m currently using this blade with Dignics 05 on the forehand and Rozena on the backhand. Other rubber combinations you could try include Hammond Z2 on the backhand and Nittaku Turbo Blue on the forehand.

This blade is quite particular about rubber pairings. It’s really designed for advanced players, and you need to get everything exactly right to achieve optimal ball quality. It’s not an easy blade to use. Therefore, I suggest opting for the Fan Zhendong ALC instead. Overall, I’d rate this blade an 8/10.

For anyone considering this blade as an upgrade from a Viscaria, it isn’t. In my opinion, it’s the least controllable blade out of Butterfly’s ZLC, SALC, AC, and SZLC collection.

Obviously, this is just my opinion, but I wouldn’t recommend this blade. If I had the choice again, I would go for a FZD ALC instead.

87g with Dignics 05 2.1mm on both sides, or Dignics 09C 2.1mm on the forehand (~185g total), are the best rubber combinations for this blade.

It is not as fast as a standard Viscaria, but it offers more stability, control, and excellent spin. The flared (FL) handle feels very good, and the overall quality is amazing.

I also tried Tibhar K3 (53 and 55 hardness) and Xiom C57.5 (54.4g without glue - 1.5g). They all perform very well on the forehand; however, the total weight exceeded 190g. Tenergy 05 2.1 works well on a Timo Boll ALC or Viscaria, but less so on this blade. It seems designed for Dignics 09C and Dignics 05.
