Donic Defplay Classic V3
Blade description:
This is a composite blade featuring a 3+2 construction with a balsa core and glass fiber plies. Characterized by its lightweight build, the blade is primarily designed for defensive play styles, though it possesses enough speed to transition effectively into flat hits, smashes, and aggressive blocks. It offers a soft, vibration-heavy feel that is distinct from traditional non-balsa defensive blades.
Playing Characteristics
- Speed and Feel: The balsa core provides a soft touch and a unique vibration profile. While it allows for controlled, slow-paced defensive play, it remains surprisingly fast during offensive maneuvers compared to other traditional defensive blades.
- Spin and Arc: The blade produces high-stability, high-arc shots when paired with inverted rubbers. It performs best for spin production with top-down strokes rather than upward loops.
- Rubber Pairing and Stability: Due to the soft nature of the balsa, the blade can be prone to instability or vibration against high-speed incoming shots. Pairing it with harder rubbers on at least one side is recommended to improve responsiveness and stabilize the blade during blocks.
- Defensive Versatility: It is well-suited for close-to-the-table play, particularly when using long pips. It is effective for steady blocks and controlled chopping, though players seeking to generate significant backspin through heavy active chopping may find the soft construction limits their output.

Too fast for defensive play. The overall quality is low, and the construction appears to be rough.

This is a particularly slow blade with a balsa core.
It has great control but must be matched with the right rubbers. I use a tacky rubber, usually Hurricane 3-50, on the forehand for low-arcing loops. I use long pips on the backhand for good chopping defense and close-to-the-table blocks.

This is the new version with a single balsa core and glass fiber plies.
I picked up this blade as a spare. I tested it with Donic Bluefire JP01 1.8mm and a couple of different long pips. Chops are just as good as the more popular Defplay Senso V3, and it is much faster on flat hits and smashes.
Despite being a balsa blade, you still get pretty good spin on loops. If you tend to attack with more speed than spin, I would choose this blade over the Defplay Senso V3.
