Nittaku Meister Basaltec Outer

Blade description:

The Nittaku Basaltec Outer is a high-performance composite blade characterized by its premium craftsmanship and balanced playing profile. Designed in collaboration with Soul Spin, this blade features a 3+2 construction that incorporates basalt fiber, providing a distinct feeling that bridges the gap between traditional 7-ply woods and standard carbon composite blades.

Playing Characteristics

  • Speed and Control: The blade offers a versatile speed range that remains manageable for offensive play. It provides significant power for mid-distance loops and smashes while maintaining a predictable, high-level control that prevents the “too fast” sensation often associated with some carbon blades.
  • Feel and Feedback: Despite being a stiff composite blade, it is noted for a clear, woody feel and a pleasant, non-jarring level of vibration. It offers a large sweet spot, ensuring consistency even on off-center hits.
  • Handling: The blade features a signature 3D handle technology, which is ergonomically designed for superior comfort and a secure grip. Some versions utilize an asymmetric handle design, contributing to a stable feel in the hand during intense rallies.

Build and Quality

  • Construction: This is a 3+2 composite blade. It is highly regarded for its aesthetic appeal, utilizing high-quality wood veneers—often noted for their clean, straight grain—and meticulous edge finishing.
  • Weight Distribution: Users frequently report a weight distribution that favors the handle, which can enhance maneuverability. Given the manufacturing nature of such high-end materials, individual blade weight can vary, influencing the final speed and balance.
  • Equipment Compatibility: The blade is generally accommodating to a wide variety of rubber types, including both modern European tension rubbers and firmer Chinese-style sponges, though it performs best when paired with rubbers that complement its specific balance of stiffness and dwell time.

To begin with, I’ll say that the Basaltec Outer is favored over the Basaltec Inner. Three reasons for this are that the Outer is lighter, the control is equally good, and it’s faster.

The Outer is a really excellent blade with outstanding control, good speed, and can accommodate any rubber (as I have tried Chinese rubbers as well as European Tensor rubbers). Because the blade is fast and somewhat stiff, I tend to use soft rubbers so that I maintain the feel as much as possible. And THAT is the only not positive aspect of this blade. I say that mainly because, in particular, I like blades that vibrate and help you feel the blade contacting the ball…etc.

The blade does everything well. Mid-distance hitting, looping, short game, chopping, …it does everything well.

I have 2 Basaltec outers. I bought them about 2 years apart. The first one came and weighed 94g, which I was NOT expecting and sort of kept me from using it for a while. However, I got used to it, and it has turned out to be excellent. The second one I purchased from TT11, I asked ahead of time if they could provide the lightest one they had in inventory, which they did. It weighed 86g, which was a BIG difference for me. So I began using this and right away noticed some things. First, the lighter weight made this blade even more pleasant to handle and play with. Second, it was certainly a little slower than the heavier one. But not very noticeable, and is still a fast enough blade.

If you want an excellent carbon blade that is well-built with very high quality of workmanship, and that will last - then this is a great choice. I tend to think this suits intermediate players best along with advanced players.

I also recently bought the Actec, which is more expensive but only 5 plys (3 + 2) and is quite a bit lighter. It’s also faster than the Basaltec. I have yet to make up my mind which of these I prefer. They are both excellent. If I could have my way, I would want to have this blade but at a lower weight, like 82 - 84 g. That would be ideal for me, but the lighter it is, the slower it is.

Very good for playing away from the table and provides good control when playing near the table. The vibrations are pleasant without being jarring (other bats have too much vibration at times) and it feels solid when playing.

Much faster than Basaltec Inner and suitable for playing far from the table. Harder to control but easy to get used to. Quality and hitting area are great.
