Nittaku Barwell Fleet
Blade description:
The Nittaku Barwell Fleet is a premium, high-performance offensive blade renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and versatility. Featuring a unique 3+2 construction utilizing glass fiber, this blade provides a distinctive feel that bridges the gap between the natural, soft sensation of an all-wood blade and the added performance of a composite frame. It is characterized by high-end build quality and a sophisticated finish, typical of Nittaku’s manufacturing standards.
Performance Characteristics
- Speed and Control: This blade operates in the OFF to OFF+ range, offering a balance that allows for both delicate short-game touches and explosive power when engaging in offensive strokes. It is highly responsive, behaving linearly in relation to the player’s input.
- Feel and Feedback: Despite its stiffness, it provides excellent sensory feedback and a large sweet spot. Players often describe the sensation as “an extension of the hand,” noting that it offers a harmonious, wooden-like feel that allows for precise ball placement.
- Spin Generation: The construction is designed to be a “topspin monster,” making it highly effective for looping, opening against backspin, and generating heavy rotation.
- Versatility: The blade excels across all distances from the table. It is highly regarded for its stability during blocks, consistency in counter-driving, and ease of use in the short game, including pushes and serves.
Physical Attributes
- Construction: The blade utilizes a glass fiber composite (3+2 construction), which contributes to its power while maintaining a clean, vibration-controlled feel.
- Weight and Balance: It is generally perceived as a medium-to-heavy blade. Depending on the specific weight of the unit and the chosen rubber setup, it can lean toward being head-heavy, a characteristic often preferred by intermediate to advanced offensive players for added momentum in strokes.
- Handle and Ergonomics: The handles are frequently noted for being comfortable and slightly larger than those on many standard blades, contributing to a secure grip during high-intensity play.
This blade is recommended for intermediate to advanced players who prioritize ball feel and control without sacrificing the power required for modern offensive table tennis. While it represents a significant investment, its build quality and performance consistency make it a highly regarded option for players seeking a professional-grade, reliable “go-to” blade.

Excellent blade for anti-spin rubber, short pips, or even long pips rubber.

I’ve played table tennis for about 6 years and during all those years I have only used all-wood blades (Korbel, Stiga Clipper, Nittaku Acoustic). After 6 years, I felt like I was ready to get a faster blade. I have researched all the forums, group chats, blogs, and YouTube channels. In the end, I have shortlisted 2 blades: Viscaria and Marcos Freitas ALC (formerly known as Michael Maze). I was very close to buying one of them, but at the last minute, I had a second thought about Nittaku as my last blade was Nittaku Acoustic and I liked it very much, I thought Nittaku must have more good blades, so I went on tabletennis11 and looked for Nittaku blades and started reading the reviews of a couple of Nittaku blades, and one of them was Barwell Fleet. I read a lot of very good reviews. I then went onto other table tennis forums to see what other players think about it and read more positive opinions about this blade and the vast majority were very happy with it. One day I saw that this blade was on sale 50% off and I bought it without thinking twice. And now I am the most satisfied with my blade that I have ever been. This blade is a work of pure harmony between speed, feel, and control. And that is all you want in a blade. It has all the speed you need, the feel like it’s your hand and the control that lets you place the ball with millimeter accuracy. It’s a shame that Nittaku does not have the publicity and popularity of Butterfly; they truly deserve that, but this blade is as good as any blade anyone thinks is the best in his/her opinion. I have not owned many blades in my 6 years of playing, but I have tried many in the clubs I went to and none came close to Barwell Fleet. It’s a shame that I still have not tried the Viscaria or the Marcos Freitas blades that I initially wanted to buy just to compare with mine. I am sure I will try them one day; however, my hesitation to impulse buying and loyalty to Nittaku has repaid me with the best blade I could have. I hope it lasts a long time. Thank you Nittaku and tabletennis11 for finding me the blade of my dreams.
