Nittaku Septear
Blade description:
Characteristics and Performance
The Nittaku Septear is a 7-ply wooden blade crafted entirely from Hinoki wood. It is widely recognized for its exceptional touch, high level of control, and distinct ball-impact feedback. While it falls within the OFF- to OFF speed category, it offers a “geared” performance: it remains controllable and precise for short, delicate touch shots and blocks, yet provides sufficient speed for aggressive topspin loops and smashes when swung with intensity.
Feel and Technical Feedback
The blade is characterized by a soft but stiff feel, offering a significant amount of dwell time that aids in spin generation. Users note that it behaves more like a traditional high-performance blade than the singular, soft feel often associated with 1-ply Hinoki blades. While it is highly capable for mid-distance play, its primary strengths are often found in close-to-the-table exchanges, where its accuracy in blocking and counter-looping shines.
Handling and Recommendations
- Rubber Pairing: The blade performs best when paired with medium-hard to hard sponge rubbers. Combining it with soft, mushy rubbers can lead to a lack of power and unpredictable feedback.
- Handle Design: The handle is notably thinner than those of many other manufacturers, which users with smaller hands often find comfortable, though those with larger hands may find it less ideal.
- Weight and Balance: The blade is generally lightweight, though the overall balance of the racket will depend heavily on the weight and hardness of the chosen rubbers.
- Suitability: It is highly recommended for intermediate players or those transitioning from carbon blades who prioritize precision, feedback, and “surgical” ball placement over the raw, dampened speed of composite blades.

Incredible build quality. The smell of the wood (cypress) itself is addictive!
Very consistent. Powerful enough especially for short distance play (I hit as hard, if not harder than players with carbon blades) to medium distance, but you can really feel the ball. The benefit vs carbon blades is that you are less likely to overshoot the table with the right technique. So, it is implied that you should have a reasonably advanced technique level to really enjoy this blade. But when you do, what a reward! It feels less soft and has less dwell time than the Acoustic, but it is much faster and responsive, so it is definitely my preference for an aggressive playing style, with top spin drives, power loops, active block, and killer pushes. It can be combined with Fastarc G1 for better loops/power loops, or with MX-P (with which I play) to increase the accuracy of your topspin drives/flat hits. Thank you, Nittaku team!
