Blade description:

The Nittaku Septear is an illustrious 7-ply table tennis blade renowned for its exquisite composition of Kiso Hinoki wood, famed for its exceptional playing characteristics. With a thickness of 6.7mm and a weight of approximately 85g (+/- 5g), it strikes a balance between manageable weight and effective performance. Many players appreciate this blade for its combination of speed and control, scoring an impressive 9.5 on the speed scale and a commendable 8.5 for control. The blade’s design ensures a high dwell time, allowing players to generate significant spin and precision during their shots.

Flexibility is a noteworthy attribute of the Septear, giving it a softer feel compared to many traditional 7-ply blades. Stiffness is rated at 4.7, allowing for dynamic shot execution while providing enough feedback for accurate ball placement – an essential feature for serious competitors. This blade shines particularly in looping, blocking, and delivering powerful smashes, making it suitable for players of varying styles, though it performs best with medium to hard sponge rubbers. Pairing it with soft rubbers may result in a mushy feel, which can diminish its impressive control attributes.

For those considering alternatives, the Nittaku Septear stands strong against other all-wood blades like the Yasaka YEO or Stiga Clipper, though it holds a unique advantage due to the use of high-quality Hinoki wood. Players transitioning from a 5-ply to the Septear report an enhanced control experience, though they caution against using classic and softer rubbers that may hinder the blade’s capabilities. Overall, this blade is a compelling choice for intermediate to advanced players seeking a blend of speed, control, and the traditional feel of wood.

For intermediate players with a taste for hinoki, this blade is a great choice. It excels at drives and smashes, and is also good at loops. Blocking is a breeze, and it has a good short game. It pairs well with hurricanes and hybrid rubbers.

The blade has that distinct hinoki catapult effect. It is usually better to pair it with mid-hard or harder sponges. The blade is noticeably head heavy with H3N '39 & Rakza Z 2.0 attached, with a combined weight of 190 grams, the blade alone weighing 87 grams.

With H3NPBS40 and O7CG, a 7-ply blade differs significantly from a 1-ply blade in terms of feel and performance. This blade may lack power, possibly falling in the ALL+/OFF- range. It’s recommended to read reviews before purchasing. The reviewer continues to search for the 1-ply feel of their previous Nittaku 1-ply Jpen, which they sold 35 years ago and regret selling.

This is one of the best all wood blades out there. It has decent speed, making it very controllable and very good for close and mid-distant attacks. Highly recommended!
