Xiom KATANA Platinum - Chinese Penhold Review

Background:

As an amateur penhold player with 2 years of experience, I’ve tested this blade extensively over several weeks.

Blade Performance:

Overall, the Xiom KATANA Platinum excels as a looping blade from mid-distance due to its soft feel. Compared to other wood rackets, it generates topspin loops with minimal effort. Despite its speed, it remains controllable even at fast strokes thanks to its above-average dwelling time. In touch play, controlling the ball during pushes and backspin chops is effortless.

Pros:

  • Excellent looping ability from mid-distance
  • Effortless spin generation
  • Controllable even at high speeds

Cons:

  • Heavy for RPB loops or flicks (approximately 100g without rubber)
  • The thickness of the Hinoki material can be bothersome initially

Update #2:

After using the blade for a prolonged period, I have revised my assessment of its control rating from 9 to slightly lower. While looping remains easy, shot accuracy is not guaranteed, and some shots tend to fly off the table. This suggests that the blade requires adjustment in racket angle, especially when using soft rubber.

Additionally, the blade’s thickness and weight hinder RPB shots on the backhand, despite using lightweight rubbers. As a result, full swings can be limited.

Summary:

The Xiom KATANA Platinum is a specialized blade that excels in smashing, mid-to-long distance looping, and blocking. For short game and touch play, it demands precise racket angle adjustments to prevent overhitting. Beginner players should consider a more forgiving blade. This blade is best suited for experienced players with strong physical and technical skills.
