Blade description:

The Xiom Zetro Quad is a composite blade featuring a unique 3+2 construction that incorporates Zylon and carbon layers. Despite its composite nature, the blade is characterized by a soft, wood-like feel provided by its thick Kiso-hinoki outer plies, which offer significant dwell time and exceptional touch for the short game. While it provides a crisp, solid response during high-impact shots, it maintains a level of vibration that allows for reliable tactile feedback.

Playing Characteristics

  • Speed and Power: Positioned in the offensive (OFF) range, the blade offers a controlled gear for touch shots and a higher “second gear” of power that engages during fast rallies or aggressive smashes.
  • Spin Generation: Highly regarded as a “spin machine,” the blade excels at generating heavy topspin, making it particularly effective for both brush looping and loop-driving. The soft outer plies allow the ball to sink into the blade, providing a secure, spin-heavy trajectory.
  • Control and Feel: The blade is noted for its consistency and balance. It is versatile enough to handle delicate touch play near the table, yet stable enough for mid-to-long distance attacking. While some users find it highly intuitive, others note it can be sensitive to heavy, high-tension rubbers.
  • Suitability: It pairs effectively with a wide range of rubbers, including Euro-Japanese and Chinese varieties, though results may vary based on sponge hardness and throw angle preferences. It is best suited for attackers who prioritize spin and placement over raw, uncontrolled speed.

This blade is a literal pain in the butt. The serious problem with it is that it makes your setup more bouncy and spin-sensitive, and by a lot. This can be a pleasant thing for looping and adding spin to serves, but dealing with an opponent’s heavy spin is a nightmare when using ZQ. On an advanced level, using this blade can mean an automatic disadvantage for receiving serves, pushing, countering, or blocking spin-loaded loops. No wonder a former $150 blade was sold for a mere $50 before it was discontinued. I can name at least a dozen other similarly fast blades that are much better in the mentioned fields.

This blade was groundbreaking, and I understand why Xiom discontinued it since comparable blades are significantly more expensive. It features distinct zylon and carbon plies rather than being interwoven.

Top. I own two of them, and I feel very lucky to have them. Attackers and spinners dream…
