Butterfly Sapphira

Rubber description:

This rubber is a versatile offensive sheet that emphasizes controllability and multi-gear performance. It is particularly noted for its capability in looping and executing blocks, as well as its ability to keep the ball short when playing defensively. Its behavior is characterized by a reliable, linear response where speed is accessible through intentional, full-swing strokes rather than minimal effort.

Technical Characteristics

  • Rubber Type: Hybrid
  • Playing Feel: The rubber features a soft sponge that provides increased dwell time compared to classic alternatives, facilitating easier looping. It is noticeably heavier than standard rubbers of its class.
  • Spin and Reactive Properties: While capable of generating spin for looping, it is notably less sensitive to incoming opponent spin, behaving somewhat like an anti-spin rubber during service returns. This makes it a stable choice for blocking and countering, though it may struggle to lift heavy underspin balls compared to highly tacky alternatives.
  • Performance Dynamics: It offers a wide range of gears, allowing for controlled, short defensive play or sudden, unexpected speed during kills. It performs most effectively when used on the forehand side, as it requires a deliberate, hard-hitting stroke to generate the necessary power to end points.

Surprisingly, this budget-friendly Sapphira rubber can perform similarly to the standard DHS Hurricane. However, it lacks the speed that is crucial for dominating opponents, particularly in close-table situations where giving the opponent a chance to attack can be detrimental. On the other hand, if you loop hard enough, it may create opportunities for you to initiate an attack.

Given its price tag, do not expect too much from this rubber. Nevertheless, it works well for training purposes. I have also found that it is only suitable for use on the forehand; when placed on the backhand, it fails to generate the necessary power to thwart your opponent effectively. Therefore, do not anticipate finishing the game with minimal strokes.

This rubber is very good, even better than Mark V and Globe 999T. Its performance surpasses these popular options, making it an excellent choice for players seeking quality in their equipment.

This rubber is great for executing blocks and punches. I have it on my Amultart ZLC, and I find it controllable while still providing the speed needed when necessary—this might also be due to my blade’s characteristics.

It is reliable for both close and far table play, particularly for blocks and counters. Additionally, it is not reactive to spinny serves, much like an anti-spin rubber. This quality is beneficial for returns, but it can pose challenges when attempting to loop a heavy underspin ball.
