Stiga Innova Ultra Light

Rubber description:

This rubber is a classic inverted offensive-style sheet characterized by an ultra-lightweight construction and a soft sponge. It offers a low throw angle and a distinct tactile feel, making it well-suited for controlled defensive or all-round play, particularly on the backhand side. Players often note that while it provides a consistent, predictable response for pushes and blocks, it can lack the aggressive speed and high-end spin potential found in modern alternatives.

Playing Characteristics

  • Spin and Speed: The rubber provides moderate speed and spin, often described as lacking the high-geared performance required for advanced, thin-contact looping. It is noted for being relatively insensitive to incoming spin, which aids in service returns.
  • Control and Dwell Time: It features a soft sponge that offers good feedback, facilitating high levels of control during passive blocks and defensive strokes. However, the sponge can bottom out during harder contact, requiring active, positive strokes to keep the ball from hitting the net due to its low trajectory.
  • Durability and Surface: The topsheet features a slightly tacky finish, though some users report that performance significantly degrades over time, with the rubber feeling “dead” without the use of speed glue. The lightweight nature of the sponge is a primary functional benefit, though consistency in weight and sponge quality has been reported to vary significantly in recent production runs.

Used this rubber quite a lot in the 2000’s on my backhand. Back in the day it was ultra light for a max rubber, 50-55g uncut. Lot’s of gears with great versatility, but it would start losing speed after a month, and be dead after 2.

I recently picked up a sheet on AliExpress for $12, which weights 70g uncut, the sponge is not how I remember it, and is way too heavy. I think the stuff on AliExpress is counterfeit, if I remember correctly this rubber went out of production around 2010.

Highly recommend you DO NOT BUY this rubber today!

Nice backhand rubber for defensive players. Provides good spin and great control.

Used for 110 hours on a Stiga Allround backhand, blocks and pushes are OK while speed and spin are lacking. More consistent than a short pip, but heavier at 39g glued. More durable and spin-sensitive than Focus III Snipe, which I prefer nevertheless as it has more spin at the same low speed and weight.
