Xiom Vega Pro

Xiom Vega Pro - packageXiom Vega Pro - sponge

Rubber description:

The Xiom Vega Pro is a highly regarded tensor rubber, widely recognized as a versatile, performance-oriented option for offensive players. It features a medium-hard, dense sponge paired with a grippy, high-quality topsheet, providing a balance of speed, spin, and control that remains competitive with many premium-priced rubbers.

Playing Characteristics

  • Spin and Control: The rubber is celebrated for its impressive spin potential, allowing for dangerous topspin loops and high-quality, spinny serves. While it is highly capable of creating heavy spin, it is noted for being less spin-sensitive than some newer, bouncier alternatives, which enhances accuracy in the short game and blocking.
  • Speed and Feel: As a tensor, it offers a linear and predictable speed curve. It is not an uncontrollable “rocket” but provides ample power when the user commits to a full, aggressive stroke. The dwell time is generally considered good, making it highly effective for loop-to-loop rallies and mid-distance play.
  • Throw Angle: The rubber possesses a medium to medium-high throw angle, which aids in lifting backspin balls and provides a safe arc over the net during topspin attacks.

Practical Considerations

  • Versatility: While it excels as a forehand rubber for looping-dominant players, many users also utilize it effectively on the backhand for flicking, counter-attacking, and stable blocking.
  • Technical Demand: This rubber rewards proper technique. It is generally recommended for intermediate to advanced players who have developed consistent stroke mechanics, as it may feel demanding or “dead” if played with passive strokes.
  • Maintenance and Durability: The rubber is known for its durability and consistent performance over time. Users should be aware that the sponge may be absorbent; if using solvent-based glues, it may require multiple coats and can be prone to shrinking if removed and re-glued frequently. Pairing it with a stiffer or carbon-composite blade is often cited as the ideal configuration to unlock its full potential.

I feel that this rubber is what got me into real table tennis in the first place. This was on my first set up on the FH side, and I felt like I had the ability to learn everything on this rubber. While it is a tensor, it’s not a rocket like some of the rubbers that have been coming out recently. This rubber can really do it all and is pretty player-friendly, being on the softer side.

The rubber offers respectable spin, speed, and mostly control for around 40 bucks. Its strength is definitely consistency as I find you can execute any technique with this rubber: flick, drive, loop, etc., without having to have perfect technique. This means you can really control the game. I will probably come back to this as a mainstay rubber pretty soon as I don’t train as much anymore. Highly recommend.

Balanced rubber with good speed and spin close to Tenergy 05. The best thing about it is its durability.

The first thing I noticed was the stability, but not excessive grip of the rubber. Spin: 7 Direct shots: 10 Short balls: 8.
