Stiga Airoc Astro S
Rubber description:
This rubber is a hybrid featuring a high-density sponge and a top sheet specifically optimized for the plastic ball. It is designed to bridge the gap between high-velocity offensive play and refined short-game precision, offering significant tactile feedback and a distinct acoustic profile during contact.
Performance Characteristics
- Spin and Dwell Time: The rubber provides high spin potential on loops and serves, with an arc that ranges from medium to high depending on the contact angle. The interaction between the top sheet and sponge allows for a noticeable dwell time, enabling the player to brush the ball effectively for heavy spin generation.
- Speed and Catalpult: While it possesses a high ceiling for speed during driving and smashing, the catapult effect is controllable, allowing for significant variation in pace. It is capable of both fast, aggressive counter-attacks and deliberate, slow pushes that keep the ball low and tight to the table.
- Control and Feel: The rubber is characterized by its high level of “feeling,” which assists in placement and blocking. While it is highly capable in defensive or neutral exchanges, its performance can vary based on the hardness of the blade; pairing it with a stiffer or carbon-composite blade is often recommended to maximize power output and prevent bottoming out.
- Surface and Durability: The top sheet exhibits a slight tackiness that enhances grip on the plastic ball. Users should note that this surface property may diminish over time, requiring consistent maintenance to retain its initial spin characteristics.

Very good looper and blocker. Driving was good and effective. Serves were not very easy. However, recurving was pretty good. Opening and countering were easy, but it did bottom out on occasion. This rubber is good for intermediate players and those who are good and want control over power and speed.

I haven’t used this rubber for long, but I agree with the ratings on speed and spin. However, I find the control to be less than what is stated, which is something I’m struggling with. I’m using 1.9mm on the forehand and I find it excellent for spin serves, counter-hitting and blocking. I like this rubber for the new plastic ball and can generate good topspin and sidespin when looping.

I use this as my FH rubber on the Stiga Carbonado 290, paired with Stiga Mantra S on my BH (both 1.9mm thickness). This rubber is awesome. It has great speed, excellent control, and top-notch spin. The build quality is superb, and the blue, high-density sponge gives a good feeling when brushed on the plastic ball.
