The Stiga Airoc Astro S is a highly regarded table tennis rubber, designed to cater to players seeking a blend of spin, control, and speed. This rubber shines particularly with the modern plastic ball, providing the necessary grip and feedback that many players desire. Rated for its exceptional spin capabilities (128) and impressive speed (144), it effectively balances power and precision, making it suitable for both offensive and defensive strategies.
The tackiness of the Airoc Astro S is rated at 4.2, which means it provides a good amount of grip for spinning the ball, but it is not overly sticky. This characteristic allows players to execute a variety of strokes with confidence, including looping and counter-hitting, making it a favorite among intermediate to advanced players. Its low-medium weight (4.1) contributes to a dynamic feel, allowing for quick reactions and enhanced maneuverability.
Durability is a notable aspect for the Airoc Astro S, although some users have reported that the tacky top sheet can wear out faster than desired; for many, it tends to diminish after a few weeks of regular play. Given this, players might want to consider alternative rubbers if longevity is a critical factor. Alternatives like the Stiga Mantra S or the Calibra series can provide similar performance, but with varying characteristics that may cater better to certain playing styles.
In summary, the Airoc Astro S stands out for its excellent spin, control, and speed, making it a strong option for those who want a rubber that can adapt to multiple play styles while retaining a unique feel and a satisfying sound during play.
Very good looper and blocker. Driving was good and effective. Serves were not very easy. However, recurving was pretty good. Opening and countering were easy, but it did bottom out on occasion. This rubber is good for intermediate players and those who are good and want control over power and speed.
I haven’t used this rubber for long, but I agree with the ratings on speed and spin. However, I find the control to be less than what is stated, which is something I’m struggling with. I’m using 1.9mm on the forehand and I find it excellent for spin serves, counter-hitting and blocking. I like this rubber for the new plastic ball and can generate good topspin and sidespin when looping.
I use this as my FH rubber on the Stiga Carbonado 290, paired with Stiga Mantra S on my BH (both 1.9mm thickness). This rubber is awesome. It has great speed, excellent control, and top-notch spin. The build quality is superb, and the blue, high-density sponge gives a good feeling when brushed on the plastic ball.
