Victas VS > 401
Rubber description:
The Victas VS>401 is a specialized hybrid rubber designed primarily for modern defensive players and aggressive choppers. It features a hard, dense sponge paired with a grippy, non-tacky topsheet that provides a direct, linear feel. This combination allows for a high degree of precision in the short game, making it highly effective for controlled pushes, blocks, and heavy backspin chops.
Playing Characteristics
- Spin Potential: Extremely high. It excels at generating heavy underspin for defensive chops and service, while also capable of producing significant spin on topspin drives and loops when using proper technique.
- Speed and Dwell: The rubber is not categorized as high-speed; it is relatively slow and controlled compared to modern offensive tensors. It possesses a distinct “gear” system where it remains stable during passive play but provides sufficient power when swinging aggressively.
- Control and Feel: The hard sponge provides a solid, direct touch that is highly valued for blocking and placement. While it offers excellent stability, the weight of the rubber is notable and can significantly alter the balance of a racket.
- Technical Requirements: Due to its hard sponge and specific playing characteristics, it is generally considered best suited for intermediate to advanced players who possess consistent technique.
Suitability and Usage
- Strategy: Ideally suited for defensive or all-round playstyles. It is particularly effective for players who shift between chopping from mid-to-far distance and executing controlled attacks at the table.
- Blade Pairing: Performance is heavily dependent on the blade; it tends to pair best with stiff blades, as some users report a “dead” or lifeless sensation when used on overly soft or flexible setups.
- Handling: It is effective at nullifying incoming spin, aiding in steady blocking and flat hitting, though it requires an active stroke to maximize its offensive potential. Users should be prepared for a substantial weight increase on their setup.

I have been using Victas 401 for many years. It is easily the best backhand rubber I have ever used. So much control and loads of spin. Not the fastest, but on a fast Carbon blade, it is fast enough.

This is the best rubber on the market if you like to push and chop. I use this rubber predominantly on my backhand.
It is also fantastic if you like to make topspin shots.
I use this rubber on offensive blades at a 1.5mm thickness. I purchased a 1.8mm thickness but I haven’t used it yet.
I also switch it to my forehand if I am making close to the table forehand shots when I am initiating the attack.
I have purchased this rubber FIVE times. I LOVE this rubber.
If you have an all-around game I would highly recommend it.

VS401 black 2mm on forehand.
Pros:
- Super spinny rubber
- A beast at chopping
- A lot of power when needed
- Many gears
- Ultra high durability
Cons:
- Very heavy
VS401 fits the Matsushita Special blade like a dream. “Spin oriented high energy tension rubber for aggressive chopper”. Nothing to add, probably the most accurate description you can get about it.
Probably my favorite rubber of all time (with V20 Double Extra).
