Butterfly Iolite
Blade description:
The Iolite is a high-speed offensive blade defined by its stiff construction and unique tactile feedback. It features a 3+2 construction utilizing Hinoki outer plies, a thick Kiri core, and composite layers. This combination produces a very fast, rigid feel that remains soft upon contact, resulting in a distinct sound during impact.
Performance Characteristics
- Feel and Feedback: Despite being exceptionally stiff, the blade maintains a soft touch, allowing for unexpectedly high control when paired with modern tensor or high-tension rubbers.
- Speed and Versatility: Designed as an offensive weapon, it excels in high-speed play while remaining versatile enough to accommodate various equipment setups, including combinations of inverted rubber, short pips, and long pips.
- Physical Build: The handle is notably thin, which may impact grip comfort depending on player preference. The blade maintains consistent playing dimensions regardless of whether it is used in a shakehand or penhold configuration.
This blade is recognized for its specialized construction and is often compared favorably to other prominent composite blades for its unique balance of rigidity and soft feeling. It performs well with both traditional and modern sponge rubbers.

Iâve tried bty timo ball alc, tb spirit, bty amultard, and bty viscaria. Out of all of them, I think the iolite is the best! I got this item unintentionally. Even though it is a second hand item, it has greatly benefited my performance. Unfortunately, it is no longer being produced.
Iâm playing with one side with short pips and the other side with long pips. Itâs stiff, fast, and has very good control.

I canât believe there are only two reviews of this wonder so far. Iolite is the Holy Grail for those addicted to speed who want to keep a nice and soft touch. Iâve already tried to find another composite blade with the same characteristics Iolite has (super fast, stiff as a brick, and soft) but failed. Iolite is a one-of-a-kind blade. Iâm playing one side with short pips, the other side inverted. Itâs a true offensive weapon. And thereâs the bonus of the incredible nice sound it makes at every stroke. I just donât understand the reason BTY stopped manufacturing these types of blades, with a thick kiri center, composite, and hinoki outer plies. Moonbeam was another wonderful blade that was discontinued without a replacement.
