Nittaku Hino 5.22
Blade description:
This Nittaku composite blade utilizes a 5+2 construction, featuring hinoki wood layers and four layers of carbon (two per side). Designed for advanced players, the blade offers a high level of speed with a focus on power from mid-distance, though it maintains a surprisingly refined touch in the short game. While it provides a crisp, hard feel characteristic of carbon, the hinoki core contributes to a unique feedback profile and sufficient dwell time for spin-oriented play.
Performance Characteristics
- Speed and Power: The blade possesses a high top-end speed, often described as faster than standard ALC blades. Its power output is particularly effective for heavy looping and flat hitting from mid-distance.
- Trajectory and Feel: Unlike traditional all-wood hinoki blades which produce a high arc, this model generates a flatter, more penetrating trajectory. The carbon layers stabilize the hinoki’s natural catapult effect, creating a dynamic gear range that allows for both precise touch and explosive finishing power.
- Versatility: The combination of speed and control makes it suitable for various rubber pairings, including hard offensive sponges and short pips. While it handles passive blocks and defensive maneuvers well, the direct nature of the blade requires a high level of skill to manage consistently, as it is less forgiving than slower, all-wood alternatives.

I recently purchased the Nittaku Hino 5.22 racket base, and today I completed my first 3-hour training session with it. It’s a real weapon in table tennis!
Having read previous reviews, I took a risk buying this base. The manufacturer warns that it’s not intended for intermediate players, suggesting it’s the fastest of the Nittaku rackets.
While this racket does indeed have speed, there are even faster bases available.
However, the Nittaku Hino 5.22 has quickly become my favorite table tennis racket base. It offers sufficient speed coupled with good control and maneuverability. I particularly appreciate the control and maneuverability; you can direct the ball precisely where you want and effectively block your opponent’s topspin. It’s truly a real weapon.
I’m currently using Xiom Omega VII Pro (max) on my forehand and Xiom Jekyll&HYDE C55 (max) on my backhand. Both rubbers perform well.

Fast blade with outstanding control.
It is also suitable to pair with pips-out rubber.

This blade is unlike any other, even among its hinoki brethren.
It’s a steed that requires mastery and time to truly feel and understand the game.
I love and own many hinoki blades, but this one has a double carbon layer, demanding a high level of skill.
It produces a low trajectory and requires rubbers with a hardness of 47-52 degrees. If you can handle that, you’ll be a true professional.
Now I have something to strive for.
