The Xiom Musa is a versatile table tennis rubber renowned for its exceptional control and user-friendly nature. Crafted for players who value precision over raw speed, the Musa stands out as an excellent choice for beginners and intermediate players seeking to refine their skills. Its combination of a soft, porous sponge and a grippy topsheet allows for impressive spin generation, making it suitable for various playing styles, especially defensive and all-around strategies.
In terms of tackiness, the Musa features a moderate rating of 2, which provides adequate grip for generating spin without the excessive tackiness that can hinder faster gameplay. Weighing in at only 3.7, it falls into the low-medium category, contributing to its ease of handling and control. Players appreciate the rubber’s durability, scoring an 8.2, ensuring longevity through extensive use.
Though touted primarily for its control—garnering a remarkable rating of 99—the Xiom Musa does encounter criticism regarding its speed. With a speed rating of 90, it may not cater to aggressive players looking for quick offensive plays. Instead, it shines as an all-around rubber, ideal for opening loops and short pushes. Many reviews highlight its effectiveness on backhand strokes, where its control excels in placing the ball precisely. Alternatives like the Xiom Intro or Vega Pro could serve as suitable next steps for players looking to transition to faster tensors as they advance.
Overall, the Xiom Musa remains a competitive choice for those—especially beginners—wishing to develop their fundamental techniques in table tennis, striking the right balance between spin, control, and a comfortable playing experience.
The Xiom Musa rubber did not suit me well. It was too slow for forehand and too fast for backhand, and the amount of spin was not as big as I expected.
Two undoubted advantages of this rubber are a high level of control and great durability.
To sum up, my rating for Xiom Musa (in scale 1 to 10) is:
This rubber is only suitable for beginners who need to learn proper strokes because it is neither fast nor spinny. It does nothing well despite its forgiveness and ease-of-use. I had heard that it was good for chopping, but the low spin it produced made it unsuitable for this purpose, especially compared to other slower/deader rubbers like Marder and Tackiness Chop.
A cadet at my club uses this rubber and plays well, but it seems that his performance is despite the rubber, not because of it. It is a better idea to spend money on other rubbers. (It should be noted that I like Xiom products in general, but this particular rubber does not seem to have any significant value beyond being a cheapish introductory rubber. Even then, there are better options available.)
This is a great product at a great price. I would recommend this rubber to a beginner. However, don’t be fooled, you can play well with this rubber until the intermediate level.
From here, the next step would be a Xiom Intro (introduction to tensors) and from there the Xiom Vega Pro (X). If you are serious about competing, it’s best to learn the basic strokes with a simple rubber (that has good spin) like this one. Don’t start with a tensor right away.
